Resorts World Casino New York City (RWNY), New York’s largest taxpayer, announced on December 1 that it has generated more than $3 billion for the New York Lottery’s education fund since opening in 2011.
“Since opening its doors nine years ago, Resorts World has fulfilled its commitment to be an economic driver, a good community partner, and, most important, a leader in generating significant and much-needed resources to New York’s public schools,” said Bob DeSalvio, President, Genting Americas East. “As New York now begins its recovery, we are proud to continue to provide critical support so that kids across the state have access to a higher-quality education, and we are ready to step up and elevate that support in both the short- and long-term for the state.”
Over the last nine years, RWNY generated enough revenue to fund any of the following:
12 million laptops for students (based on $250 cost)
37,500 public school teacher salaries for a year (based on NY avg public school teacher salary of $80K)
Fully fund public education for 150,000 students for one school year (based on $20K avg cost per year in NY)
6,082,725 students with school lunch for an entire school year (based on $2.74 avg cost nationwide)
The New York Lottery continues to be North America’s largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing $3.38 billion in fiscal year 2019-2020 to help support education in the state, of which RWNY generated $348 million, a greater share than any of the other video gaming operators in NY. New York City received $1.5 billion from the overall fund in 2019-2020. The revenue is used to support education across more than 700 school districts in New York State, distributed via a statutory formula that provides larger shares of funding to lower-income school districts.

Passing the $3 billion mark in revenue generated for the education fund comes just weeks after RWNY announced plans for a new hotel on property, the Hyatt Regency JFK at Resorts World New York, an eight-story, 400-room, four-star hotel, scheduled to open in Q1 2021. It will feature residential-inspired guestrooms and premium suites with state-of-the-art in-room technology. The hotel will also include new restaurants, an array of conference and meeting spaces, retail options, and additional gaming areas. RWNYC is the only casino in New York City, offering over 6,000 slots and electronic table games to millions of guests annually.
This $400 million development will bring the total investment of RWNY to over $1.1 billion since opening here, after Genting spent more than $700 million to enhance the existing Aqueduct grandstand to become a leading entertainment destination. The hotel addition is estimated to create more than 500 well-paying careers for New Yorkers and provide additional revenue for New York State’s Lottery Education Fund.
Last year, RWNY unveiled the “Good Neighbor Network,” a community partnership initiative designed to inspire, empower, and advocate for social and economic good in Queens and throughout New York State. The Network was borne out of a commitment by RWNY since opening in 2011 to partner with dozens of community organizations that address a broad range of issues including workforce development, arts and culture, and health and wellness. The Network will leverage Resorts World’s scale to assist groups by amplifying their work, helping them achieve fundraising goals, and connecting them with volunteers, supporters, and those in need of a good neighbor.

A long-planned hotel at Resorts World Casino in South Ozone Park is about to begin construction, officials said this week. The 400-room, 10-story hotel represents a major expansion of the only casino in New York City. “This new play, stay, dine and shop development will create good-paying jobs and generate significant revenue for our surrounding community and New York State,” said Scott Molina, president of Resorts World Casino New York City. “We are grateful to our local partners for their steadfast support as we prepare for phase two of our facility.” The $400-million hotel is slated to be completed by the end of next year. The first two floors are already near completion and will be ready to open some time this summer, officials said. The completion of the hotel will effectively double the size of the casino by adding an additional 500,000 square feet of space to the complex. It will include four high-end restaurants, a fitness center, another gaming room and meeting rooms. The ability to put up guests overnight— especially high rollers — and to host conventions and conferences on the casino grounds puts Resorts World on an even footing with Atlantic City and other area gambling spots. Since the casino opened in 2011 right next to Aqueduct Race Track, it has been surprisingly successful, drawing more than 10 million customers a year. It has become is the highest-grossing slot-machine casino in the world, officials say. On average, more than $1.1 billion a month is wagered through the casino’s 5,000 video machines, according the state Gaming Commission. However, betting revenues at Resorts World have been slowly trending downward over the last few years. The casino’s handle has dropped from a high of $20 billion in 2015-16 to just under $14 billion in 2017-18, the last full year for which statistics are available, according to the Gaming Commission. Betting in the current fiscal year, which ends next month, are on a par with last year, indicating the decline may be leveling off. The new hotel will extend from the casino’s main building north, toward Rockaway Boulevard, in front of the existing, four-story parking garage. It was designed by the international architecture firm Perkins Eastman, which is responsible for components of such New York projects as Battery Park City and Metrotech, as well as smaller project in Queens, including a sustainable housing development in Arverne in the Rockaways. Once the hotel is complete, casino officials say more than 1,000 jobs will be created in the southern part of Queens. Construction is not expected to affect the operations of the casino. Officials said they will make an announcement about which restaurants and other facilities will be opened in the just-completed ground floors of the new hotel.
